Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) Introduction to the aesthetic and technical potential of a variety of materials and methods basic to various art disciplines. Concentration on the skills needed to use these materials in a two- and three-dimensional art. May be taken two times. CSU

102 Drawing and Composition I
Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) A basic studio course in the media and technique of drawing. An introduction to pictorial structure, visual elements, use of perspective, and rendering and sketching techniques. This course is designed to develop skills for both commercial and fine arts. 103 Drawing and Composition II

105 Three-Dimensional Form and Design
Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) Basic instruction in sculptural forms and structures. A variety of media is explored. May be taken two times. CSU; UC (CAN ART 16)

110 Basic Drawing for Commercial Art
Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) A course on proportion and structure, quick sketching, gesture, and contour drawing. Included is the study of perspective and drawing of mechanical and natural forms by the use of line and value. Emphasis is placed on the evolutionary development of visual ideas. CSU

111 Graphic Design
Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) Design principles as they apply to graphic communication. Abstract and pictorial design for the printed media. Film and architectural signage. Lettering is applied as an abstract design element. CSU

112 Color Layout Design
Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) Prerequisite: ART 215 Use of grid techniques in producing layout designs. Color and conceptual aspects are other major considerations. Aesthetics and functionalism of designs will be explored in conjunction with assembly techniques while meeting specified deadlines. May be taken two times. CSU

Three hours lecture (3) A survey of the visual arts in China, Southeast Asia, India, Japan and Korea from the Prehistoric era to the present. The course is intended to provide a cultural perspective and offer an historical framework for understanding the major monuments of Asian art as well as the religious, philosophical and political ideas that generate their production. Three hours lecture (3) A survey of the tribal arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas from the Prehistoric era to the present. The course is intended to provide a cultural perspective for understanding the traditional arts of the native people of the Pacific, sub-Saharan Africa, North and South America as well as comprehending the values that generated their production. 168 History of Modern Art II: 20th Century Europe and America
Three hours lecture (3) Twentieth Century European and American painting, sculpture, and architecture. Emphasis on the styles and contributions of individual artists as well as the aesthetic, political, and psycho-sociological motivations behind art of this century. 169 The Seven Centuries of Sight and Sound
Three hours lecture (3) The development of music and art in the Western world from the 14th Century to the present. An analysis of the styles of each of the periods as they relate to each other and to the cultural environment from which they evolve. A study of the technical development of each of the art forms. Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) Prerequisite: ART 110 and 120 Problems in various commercial media and techniques using principles of design, composition, and color. Professional approach to realistic problems and their solution by means of accurate analysis, oral and graphic presentation of ideas, and roughs and finished art for reproduction. CSU

Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) Prerequisite: ART 210 and 211 The continued application of illustrative media and techniques directed toward advertising, institutional, and editorial illustration. 215 Introduction to Layout Design
Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) Recommended preparation: ART 110 and 111 Introduction to the grid technique of layout design. Professional standards and attitudes will be practiced while learning layout aesthetics. Designing and assembly with hand skill techniques will be emphasized. May be taken two times. CSU

216 Production Design
Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) Recommended preparation: ART 110 and 111 A continuation of ART 215 with emphasis on production of camera-ready art, including inking techniques, copy fitting, format design, and coordination with the printer. May be taken two times. CSU

220 Oil Painting I
Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) Prerequisite: Completion of, or concurrent enrollment in, ART 103 and 200 Fundamental methods and concepts of studio painting using oil color as the primary medium. Concentration on gaining technical skills in pictorial composition, subject interpretation, brush handling, and the use of color. 243 Digital 3-D Design and Modeling

Six hours lecture-laboratory (3) Prerequisite: A minimum grade of "B" in 12 units of college-level art or 6 units of college-level commercial art or graphic design A comprehensive study of presentation and fabrication of a portfolio.
