MIKE HARES

 

Mike was accepted to attend Level 2 studies at the School of Archaeology and Ancient History, University of Leicester in England.  He began in March 2006 with courses in archaeological theory and medieval archaeology. He previously worked for SWCA near Barstow and for EDAW for a year after completing work for Professional Archaeological Services in Huntington Beach at ORA-149.  Most of the work with EDAW has been with burials at the Helman Ranch Site in Seal Beach.  Michael completed the basic courses in excavation, surveying and lab analysis at Palomar and took the new course in Historical Archaeology (ANTH 225).  He interned at the San Diego Archaeological Center (Spring 2004).

NICK DOOSE




 

Nick returned to work at the Monte Christi Shipwreck Project in the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2006 as a master diver and underwater excavator.  He had previously worked on this project in 2003, led by Dr. Jerome Hall from the University of San Diego, and sponsored by INA the “Institute for Nautical Archaeology” at Texas A&M University. They excavated the remains of a 17th c. northern European merchant ship that sank sometime between 1651 and 1656 carrying clay tobacco pipes, ceramics, and household goods.  They lived on a small uninhabited desert island Isla Cabra or “Goat Island”, about 2 miles off of the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, near the border of Haiti. The wreck lies in 15 feet of water about 100 yards off the island's eastern shore.

Nick also continues to work for Gallegos and Associates and does work in GIS as well.  He was one of the excavators of the just excavated pre-Portola Expedition (A.D. 1769) horse burial site overlooking Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Nick completed courses in excavation, surveying and lab analysis at Palomar and in Historical Archaeology (ANTH 225).  Went on Underwater Archaeology Field School in the Dominican Republic (Summer 2003). Served briefly as lab assistant at Palomar. Has interned at the San Diego Archaeological Center (Spring 2004).  Was the President of the Palomar Archaeology Club in 2004.

Rob'yn Johnston
Rob'yn Johnston first joined the program when she was in Middle School at SDI-5581 where she took ANTH 120 (Archaeological Excavation) in 2002.  She has since take Advanced Excavation 3 times, twice at SDI-12510/H, and now at SDI-15547 in Poway.  SDI-5881 was an Archaic and Late Prehistoric site; SDI-12510/H was a combined Archaic and Historic site; and SDI-15547 is a rich Late Prehistoric site.  She has also taken ANTH 215 (Archaeological Lab Analysis) and will be taking ANTH 210 (Archaeological Surveying) this coming Spring 2006.  Robyn won the Golden Trowel Award in 2002.  Robyn has also been working on creating an electronic, digital version of Dr. de Barros grammar of the Mina language of southern Togo, West Africa.  Rob'yn is now working for the City of San Marcos in their GIS Department mapping utilities across the city.  ROB'YN IS GRADUATING FROM PALOMAR COLLEGE WITH HER AA DEGREE IN ARCHAEOLOGY AT AGE 18.  Congratulations Rob'yn!
Tracy Johnston
Tracy Johnston is Robyn's mom.  She also first joined the program when she was in Middle School at SDI-5581 where she took ANTH 120 (Archaeological Excavation) in 2002.  Her husband Robert also took the class.  She has since take Advanced Excavation 3 times, twice at SDI-12510/H, and now at SDI-15547 in Poway.  SDI-5881 was an Archaic and Late Prehistoric site; SDI-12510/H was a combined Archaic and Historic site; and SDI-15547 is a rich Late Prehistoric site.  She has also taken ANTH 215 (Archaeological Lab Analysis) and will be taking ANTH 210 (Archaeological Surveying) this coming Spring 2006.  Both she and her daughter hope to go to Togo, West Africa, with Dr. de Barros in 2007. Tracy was awarded a Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Award this past Spring.
CASSIE TREVINO


 
Cassie has completed the Palomar program.  She recently worked for PAS rehabilitating a large 300 box artifact collection excavation in San Bernardino County.  Cassie has taken courses in Archaeological Excavation (ANTH 120) and Lab Analysis (215) and is currently taking Advanced Archaeological Excavation (205).  She will be taking the Archaeological Surveying class (ANTH 210) this coming Spring 2006.  She also went with the Archaeology Club to Little Petroglyph Canyon in November 2005. 
MICHAEL TODD Michael has taken Archaeological Excavation (ANTH 120) and is currently taking Advanced Excavation (ANTH 205) at SDI-15547 in Poway, a very interesting Late Prehistoric site rich in arrowheads, animal bone, ground stone and flaked stone tools with multiple bedrock milling features.  Some shell and shell beads and glass trade beads have also been found.  Michael went to Little Petroglyph Canyon near China Lake with the Archaeology Club in November 2005. He will be taking the Archaeological Surveying class (ANTH 210) in the Spring of 2006.
MISA AN
In 2007, Misa is currently working for Professional Archaeological Services cataloging a large collection from housepit village sites in San Bernardino County.  Misa took Beginning and Advanced Excavation (ANTH 120 & 205) at SDI-15547 in Poway, a very interesting Late Prehistoric site rich in arrowheads, animal bone, ground stone and flaked stone tools with multiple bedrock milling features.  Shell beads and glass trade beads have also been found.  She took Archaeological Surveying (ANTH 210) in the Spring of 2006.
SHIRLEY QUICK



 

Shirley recently had some serious health problems which she has stoically overcome.  We are all pleased at her recovery.  Shirley assisted as a Lab Assistant in the Archaeology Lab and is taking ANTH 205 at SDI-15547 at the new site in Poway.  Shirley has completed the basic courses in excavation, surveying and lab analysis at Palomar and also took the new course in Historical Archaeology (ANTH 225).  Worked for Professional Archaeological Services in Valley Center in 2004.

DEBORAH FERRIS

In the Fall of 2006, Dr. D attended a party for Deborah (and Andrea Mitchell) who is soon graduating from SDSU in Anthropology/ Archaeology and going on to graduate school.  She took Archaeological Surveying (ANTH 210) and Beginning and Advanced Archaeological Excavation at Palomar.(ANTH 120 & 205).  She worked for Professional Archaeological Services at SDI-9537/H in April and May 2005.

BRYANA CALDWELL

Bryana recently completed (2006) her A.A. Degree and Certificates from Palomar College.  She has also now worked for almost two years for SWCA in Phoenix, Arizona as a lab supervisor.  She hopes to attend ASU in the Fall of 2007.  Bryana took the new course in Historical Archaeology (ANTH 225).  She served as Lab Assistant for the academic year 2004-2005 and also interned at the San Diego Archaeological Center.  She worked for Professional Archaeological Services at ORA-149 and SDI-9537/H in 2004 and 2005.

LIZ WINIECKI

Liz is serving as Lab Assistant for the Fall 2005 field class at SDI-15547 in Poway.  Liz has completed the basic courses in excavation, surveying and lab analysis at Palomar and will be taking ANTH 205 for a second time in Poway this Fall. She also assisted in the Palomar Archaeology Lab and worked at SDI-9537/H for Professional Archaeological Services in 2005.

ANDREA MITCHELL

In the Fall of 2006, Andrea completed her B.A. in Anthropology at San Diego State and is off to Ireland with her fiance. Congratulations Andrea!  Dr. D attended a going away party for her this past Fall. Andrea completed the basic courses in excavation, surveying and lab analysis at Palomar and took the new course in Historical Archaeology (ANTH 225). She also assisted in the Palomar Archaeology Lab.

SARA DURBEN

 

Sara has completed the basic courses in excavation, surveying and lab analysis at Palomar and also took the new course in Historical Archaeology (ANTH 225). Sara has also worked in the Palomar Archaeology Lab.

BECKY THOMAS

Becky is currently working as an advanced student in ANTH 205 in Poway at SDI-15547 and represents the Archaeology Club at the InterClub Council. Becky has completed the basic courses in excavation, surveying and lab analysis at Palomar and also took the new course in Historical Archaeology (ANTH 225).


HUGO BURIAL

 

Hugo completed Beginning Excavation (ANTH 120) last Fall, and Beginning Survey (ANTH 210) last Spring, and is now a student in Advanced Excavation (ANTH 205).  Hugo is now working for a CRM firm on Edwards Air Force Base. 

PANDORA WINSBY

Pandora has completed all of the basic courses in excavation, surveying and lab analysis at Palomar and also took the new course in Historical Archaeology (ANTH 225). Pandora is currently working at the Poway Site SDI-15547 as an advanced student (ANTH 205).

JENNIFER FERREIRA

 

Jennifer is currently working as an advanced student in ANTh 205 and is the Archaeology Club's Vice-President.  Jennifer has completed the basic courses in excavation, surveying and lab analysis at Palomar and also took the new course in Historical Archaeology (ANTH 225). She has also worked in the Palomar Archaeology Lab and did fieldwork at SDI-9537/H in Pauma Valley with Professional Archaeological Services in 2005.

STEVE ROOT

 

Steve has completed Beginning Excavation (ANTH 120) and was a student in Advanced Excavation (ANTH 205) & Historic Archaeology (ANTH 225), but unfortunately injured a disk in his neck and had to drop out.  He has completely recovered and hopes to join the field class (ANTH 205) in Poway this Fall.

MIKE HAMILTON

 

Mike is currently working as an advanced student (ANTH 205) at our new site in Poway, SDI-15547.  He led a team of students that documented 24 bedrock milling features within the southern half of the site.  Mike has completed Beginning Excavation (ANTH 120) and Historic Archaeology (ANTH 225).  He works full time for the Marine Corps.  Mike also sends interesting articles on archaeology and anthropology to Dr. D on a regular basis.  Thanks Mike!

JANELLE SMITH

Janelle Smith took Archaeological Excavation (ANTH 120) at SDI-12510/H learning how to excavate a prehistoric Archaic site owned by the Vallecitos Water District.  Currently she is studying at Miami University  on Carribean Protocontact period ethnographies, Gender Studies within Archaeological analysis, Museum collections and cataloging for Miami University Anthropology Museum (the collection consists of international accessions of lithic, ceramic and ethnographic materials historic and prehistoric).  She has personally researched and identified the variant Egyptian Lithics and Eastern Mediterranean Ceramics within the collection.  She also presented a paper on Carribbean Archaeology Gender reinterpretations for SEAM, the annual undergraduate forum and another paper on American-Phillipino Spiritualism Shamanistic practices in the 2006 CSAS Annual Meeting.  She is Vice President of SEAM which stands for Society for the Enhancement of Archaeological Methods, it is a campus-based student organization for Archaeology majors. I anticipate graduation May 2006 with a BA in Anthropology and BA in Environmental Science.
