Information Competency - Version 1.2

Description of skill:  Students will use printed materials, personal communications, observation, and electronic resources to find and evaluate information.

 Research:   Students will do research at a level that is necessary to achieve personal, professional, and educational success.  

Technological Competency:   Students will use technological applications to find, organize, and present information effectively.

Demonstrated Competence

Beginner

• Student will search for and locate books, reference materials, and periodicals that are appropriate to complete a college-level research project/paper through the college library online public access catalog, bound paper indexes, and dedicated online computer reference services available in the college library.
• Student will search for and locate published documentary collections and audio recordings appropriate to a college-level research project/paper, using the various reference services available in the college library.
• Student will search for and locate periodical articles and reference materials appropriate to a college-level research project/paper, available from online Internet-based encyclopedias, directories, reference sources, statistical data bases, and search engines.

Developing

• Student will organize and evaluate multiple print, audio, or interview resources obtained at the beginner level in preparation for writing a college-level research paper.
• Student will organize resources obtained at the beginner level into a clear description of the chosen topic.
• Student will compile a discipline-appropriate bibliography of sources obtained through their research at the beginner level.

Accomplished

• Student will successfully complete a college-level research paper utilizing a word processing program, and other necessary software, such as a spreadsheet, data base management program, and graphics program.

• Student will successfully discuss, present and preserve the research findings using a variety of media, including presentation software and CD recorder.
• Student will successfully publish the final product of a research project on the internet with software that may include multimedia recording and presentation capabilities.
