The library offers orientations that promote
information competency. These may be customized to meet the research needs of individual classes.
The content of the orientation will be determined in consultation with the instructor and
the librarian and based on the class assignment.
To schedule an orientation at the San Marcos
Campus call the Reference Desk at ext. 2616; for the Escondido Center, call ext. 8113.
The presentation may include introductory or advanced content on:
- the library collection and the services offered.
- using the catalog in order to locate books.
- locating magazines, journals, & newspapers using a
database, such as InfoTrac and EbscoHost.
- using print indexes such as Readers' Guide.
- using the Internet for research.
- using appropriate reference books.
- citation styles.
- issues of authority and critically evaluating sources.
Students will be guided through the process of defining their information needs and
locating and evaluating appropriate materials.
Possible Outcomes
Students will:
- know that assistance is readily available in the library.
- gain a comfort level in using the library.
- know what resources are available in the library.
- know how to use the electronic library resources from their homes.
- have success in completing assignments.
- have information skills that they can employ throughout their lives.
