Using JSTOR

The JSTOR online database contains complete, full-text articles from the most recent three to five years of core scholarly journals the arts, humanities, general science, and botany & ecology. 

Search for Articles

  1. Go to the Library Database site on the World Wide Web: http://library.palomar.edu/OnlineDatabases/databases.htm
  2. Click JSTOR
  3. Type a term or phrase in the Search box
  4. Click Search
  5. The next screen that appears will be a list of articles related to your search term(s).
Basic Search Tips 
  1. Use the ampersand (&) symbol at the end of a word to search for singular or plural variants. Example: Type box& to find citations containing the terms box or boxes.  
  2. To search for a phrase, type a word or phrase, enclosed by quotes " ", in the search box. Examples (be sure to include the quotes):
    • "population control"
    • "violence"

View Articles

  1. At the end of each article listed are three choices; click on the desired option
  2. Citation

    repeats citation

    View Article

    displays article starting on first page 

    Page of First Match

    displays page where search term(s) first appear.

Print Articles

To print one page at a time (displayed page only):  

click the print button on your browser

To print entire article or multiple pages

click Proceed with Printing (you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader software on your computer, or PostScript printing capabilities).  

NOTE: To set your printing preferences, follow the instructions on the screen. 

Advanced Searching

  1. From the JSTOR Basic Search Form page, click Advanced Search
  2. Type a word or phrase in the appropriate search box(es)
  3. To limit your search to a specific field or publication type, scroll down to "Narrow Your Search To:" and select the appropriate limit(s)
  4. Scroll down and enter journal title(s) or select a discipline to search in (click plus (+)  to select a specific journal title under a discipline)
  5. Click Search
  6. The next screen will be a Search Results List displaying citations for articles that met your search requirements.

  7. Display and printing are same as with Basic Search.
