He has an MA in Teaching ESL and has been teaching English in the U.S. and China for over 20 years. Although he is the newest full-time faculty member in the department, he is enjoying every minute of his job at Palomar.

Name: Furch, Martha (Marty)

Picture of Martha FurchProfile:  Marty Furch has an undergraduate degree in Spanish. She received an MA in Linguistics with a specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of New Mexico. She started teaching ESL in 1974 at the Catholic University in Quito, Ecuador, where she lived and worked for five years. She has taught academic ESL and basic writing skills to native speakers of English and ESL students at various colleges and universities. Currently, Marty is the Coordinator of the Vocational ESL Program at Palomar College. She is happy to help students with their questions.

Name: Henson, Lynne

Picture of Lynn HensonProfile:  Lynne Henson graduated from Cal-State Long Beach in 1972, and went to Australia to begin her first teaching assignment. She was excited, but not prepared for the room full of non-native speakers of English she saw on her first day of teaching. Within weeks, though, she realized a great love for teaching ESL and went on to teach in Papua New Guinea and the People's Republic of China. She returned to the U.S. in 1984 when she got a job in Orange County as the director of an ESL program for refugees. Later, she taught at USC, Long Beach City College and Cypress College before coming to Palomar in 1990. She currently teaches academic writing classes while working on a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Linguistics.

Name: Khurana, Nimoli

Profile:  Nimoli Khurana was born and raised in India, where she was surrounded by many languages, but mostly Punjabi, Hindi and English. From a young age, Nimoli had dreams of becoming a teacher. She got an MA in American Government and Politics and started teaching Political Science at a college in India. In 1989, she migrated to the U.S., but was unhappy during the next 2 years when she wasn't teaching. In 1991, she was hired to teach Writing and ESL at De Anza College. She discovered that she loved teaching ESL more than anything and enjoyed being surrounded by diverse cultures and students she could relate to. Consequently, she went back to school and got an MA in TESOL. Ms. Khurana taught ESL at Evergreen Valley College and Los Angeles City College before coming to Palomar College in 1997. At Palomar, she coordinates and teaches in the Fallbrook ESL program and teaches academic writing.

Name: Sivert, Shayla

Picture of Shayla SivertProfile:  Shayla Sivert received her B.A. and M.A. in Linguistics/ESL from CSU Fresno. She has been teaching ESL since 1984, and came to Palomar College in 1988. She has lived and taught in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. At Palomar, in addition to teaching ESL, Shayla works as the director of the ESL Computer Lab and as the International Student Program Representative. When not busy raising her two children, she trains in Goju-Ryu karate. She is more than happy to help you with your online writing needs.

Picture of Colleen WeldeleProfile:  Colleen Weldele received her BA in English Literature and her MA in Linguistics from San Diego State University. Her first teaching assignment was at ELS, but she also taught many years in the San Diego Community College District on the campuses of Mesa, Miramar, and San Diego City Colleges. She began teaching part-time at Palomar in 1983 and has been working here full-time since 1989. When not at Palomar, she is a volunteer soccer coach and plays soccer with various "over 30" teams in the San Dieguito and YMCA Soccer Leagues.
