Step 2 - ASSESSMENT, ADVISEMENT & ORIENTATION

Assessment: Identifies a student's present level of skills in English, reading and math. Check the Assessment Schedule online.
 
Advisement: Students receive their results and are made aware of the level of English, reading and math which they may register for.
 
Orientation: The orientation gives an overview of instructional programs and support services. Certificate, degree and transfer requirements are discussed to assist the student with registration.
 
Assessment, advisement and orientation takes approximately three hours.  For additional information about assessment, go to the Assessment web site.
 
SPECIAL TESTING
 
Non-native speakers of English: Students whose first language is not English will benefit from having an assessment designed for non-native speakers of English.  Contact the English as a Second Language (ESL) Department, Room A-17 at (760) 744-1150 x2772.
 
Students with Disabilities: Students with needs for special accommodations for testing need to contact the Disability Resource Center (DRC) at (760) 744-1150 x2375.
 
PREVIOUS PLACEMENT SCORES OR TRANSCRIPTS
 
Previous Placement Scores:  Students with previous placement scores within the last 2 years may use their previous placement.  Take the scores to Assessment for clearance in math and English.  Those with scores older than two years are required to retake the assessment.
 
Transcripts From Another College: Students can be placed into math and English based on transcripts from another school where English or math was taken.  Take the transcripts to Assessment or to Counseling for clearance.
 
AP Scores:  Students can be placed into math and English based on AP tests with a 3 or higher. 
 

SAT/ACT Scores: SAT scores of 550 and above or ACT scores of English 24, Math 23 may be used for placement.  Fax or bring in your scores to the Assessment Center.

 
MATH & ENGLISH REVIEW
 
For some sample English and math questions, go to www.testprepreview.com and search for COMPASS.  There will be sample questions.  For additional math review questions, check out the study guides provided by the math department.  Click on "Practice Problems" for problems and answers.
